Course Reflection

Florida has a long and complicated history throughout time. Learning about it was an interest of mine, since I live here. Seeing it evolve and change from natives forming societies to a pre-Hollywood film industry to even a state with dozens of different theme parks and attractions, was a very interesting timeline to view. Learning about Florida's impact on the Civil War and and vice versa, the Civil War's effect on Florida is information I wouldn't have known if I didn't seek out the knowledge I got in this class. It wasn't always bright though, there have definitely been some ups and downs when it comes to Florida's history.      Using books like A Land Remembered along with the textbook and researching for this class, it showed me that there are some dark spots in Florida's timeline and how that made people feel. For example, in the 1800's, events like the Civil War or the Big Sugar industry, affected the economy and made big companies ge...

Post about A Land Remembered.

The story continues to follow the lives of the MacIvey family. Zech, the grandson of Tobias MacIvey, is now a successful rancher and businessman in Florida. He has a wife named Glenda and three children, Sol, Bonnie, and Toby.  The chapters begins with a visit from a government inspector who informs Zech that he has been overgrazing his land and that he must reduce his herd. Zech is outraged and refuses to comply with the order, but he soon realizes that he has no choice. Zech decides to build a meatpacking plant on his land so that he can process his own cattle and sell the meat directly to consumers. He faces many challenges in building the plant, including a lack of financing and opposition from local politicians and businessmen. Meanwhile, Sol, Zech's oldest son, has become a pilot and is flying cargo planes in South America. He meets a woman named Melba and falls in love with her, but their relationship is threatened by a dangerous gang of smugglers. Bonnie, Zech's daughte...

Trip to Fort Matanzas

Image
In this post I'll be talking about my trip I took to Fort Matanzas. This was about 8 or 9 years ago in October. ( I don't remember the exact date.) I went with my dad and my sister and there was about like 3 other groups there. 2 were families and the other one was a group of school kids. It took I think 45 minutes to get there and we were there for about an hour or 2 and took some photos and admired the area around the fort.  Here are a couple photos from the visit back then.  Since it was so long ago, I don't really remember it but I think I enjoyed it for the short time I was there for. It was very pretty that day so we had a great view on the entire area around us. This also relates back to the being one of the Spanish's forts left in Florida which I had also made a previous post about.
